Hi! I'm Pilar and I’d love to share my story with you.
I have always been a curious, restless person with an unstoppable desire to play and experiment. I was born in Empordà, and after finishing high school, I moved to Barcelona to study interior design. The city captivated me from the very first moment—getting lost in its streets, discovering museums, and experiencing live music enriched me both personally and creatively.
It was in January 2001 when everything changed. The MACBA was hosting an exhibition by the artist Tacita Dean, and while her work fascinated me, what captivated me even more was the banner announcing the exhibition. It was stunning! So much so that I did everything I could to get one. But in the process, I made an unexpected discovery: all the banners hung across the city were thrown straight into the landfill. Nothing was recycled!
When I finally had one in my hands, I started exploring its creative possibilities—the texture, the dur ability, the colors… A whole new world opened up before me!
With this enthusiasm, I created a collection of pieces made from banners and presented it at La Santa Projectes Culturals, within the 3rd Edition of BAC (Barcelona Art Contemporani). I designed a bib, an apron, a bag, and even the uniform for the staff of a fictional museum, with pieces that would change depending on the exhibition on display.
The project was selected and exhibited in the shop windows of the iconic Vinçon store, on Passeig de Gràcia. Seeing my work displayed in such a prestigious space was an indescribable experience.
Recycle, transform, create
Over the years, I started collaborating with local councils and fairs, transforming banners into corporate gifts and merchandise. It was rewarding to see how some institutions took responsibility for their waste and gave materials a second life.
But my curiosity didn’t stop there. One day, I got my hands on a piece of carpet used at the Fira de Barcelona. With a new team, we experimented until we created a bag inspired by origami techniques. This piece became the first bag made from recycled materials to be presented at 080 Barcelona Fashion Week, where it was used to distribute promotional materials.
We wanted to go even further and find new uses for the carpet, but we encountered a harsh reality: large volumes of this material continued to be discarded and were not being reused. Still, we found an opportunity through the Catalonia Handicraft Centre, which helped us take our bag to Feria Ambiente in Frankfurt, one of the most prestigious international trade fairs in the sector.
Falling, learning, and playing again
In 2008, after years of creating and experimenting with recycled materials, I received a proposal to design products for Expo Zaragoza using upcycled banners. Without realizing it, I was stepping into a rollercoaster of setbacks, and I soon realized that it was not the right place for me. The project didn’t turn out well, but the lessons I learned and the people I met along the way made it all worthwhile.
It was a difficult time, so I decided to take a break and return to my roots, managing the family business: a beach accessories store on the Costa Brava. This space allowed me to reconnect with myself and regain strength.
And so, 3DNEWTON is born: the game continues!
Over time, here I am again. I have the same urge to play, experiment, and create.
And with this spirit, on March 23, 2023, 3DNEWTON was born. A curious date, almost a numerical game: 23/3/23. Coincidence? Maybe not. A turning point, a new cycle, a new adventure.
Today, with @3dnewton_emporda, I continue to advocate for conscious and sustainable design. Each piece we create not only tells a story but also has a measurable positive impact.
Because recycling is not just about transforming materials—it’s about transforming the way we see the world.
